So many of us are raised on the narrative that career paths are a straight line from school to work to retirement; in reality, most of our careers will zig, zag, and squiggle. Mass layoffs, the rise of remote and flexible work, AI, social media, globalization, inflation, and the simple desire for purpose and impact are driving a huge shift in the way careers unfold. The vast majority of us will experience both periods of career stability and periods of career change or career uncertainty throughout adulthood. Career changes are quickly becoming the new normal, even when they feel shameful and scary.
